Export ChatGPT to Markdown: from account ZIP to useful notes

What the ChatGPT export gives you

OpenAI currently offers account data export through ChatGPT settings for eligible signed-in accounts, and through its Privacy Portal. The settings path is profile menu, Settings, Data controls, Export data, then Confirm export. OpenAI says the export can take up to seven days; the download link expires 24 hours after it arrives, and you need to be signed in to the account that requested it. The downloaded ZIP includes chat history and other relevant account data. Check OpenAI’s current export instructions and availability before you start.

This is an account archive, not an “Export as Markdown” command. Structured conversation data may include text and metadata, alongside other account files. Keep the original ZIP untouched and convert a separate copy.

Request and download the ZIP

1. Sign in to the ChatGPT account that contains the conversations. If you belong to a managed workspace, check with its owner about your organization’s export options.
2. Open your profile menu, choose Settings, then Data controls.
3. Under Export data, select Export, then confirm the request.
4. Watch the account email or phone for the export notice. OpenAI says processing may take up to seven days. Download the ZIP within 24 hours of the link arriving and while signed in to the requesting account.
5. Save the ZIP somewhere you can find it, then extract a working copy. Do not rename or edit files inside your preserved original archive.

Turn selected conversations into Markdown

Start by finding the conversation data in the extracted copy. Do not assume every file is a note or that every field is message text. Structured exports can include identifiers, timestamps, conversation titles, roles, and other metadata. A useful Markdown file should retain the title and readable turns while leaving implementation-specific fields out of the body unless you have a reason to keep them.

1. Choose a small set first. Pick a few chats you recognize and want to reference. An account archive may be large, so importing everything can create a noisy vault. Remember that an export cannot restore chats you already deleted.
2. Choose a conversion route. You can use a local converter that reads the exported conversation data and writes one Markdown file per chat, or use an importer that accepts the official ZIP or JSON. Review the importer’s format support and destination options before giving it the archive.
3. Choose the destination. A normal folder of Markdown files can be opened by many editors. For Obsidian, select a folder inside the vault. Keep the original ZIP outside the notes folder so it does not clutter search.
4. Review the result before scaling up. Open several notes and compare the question and answer sequence against the source conversation. Confirm that titles, code blocks, tables, and special characters survived.

Chatlog provides a guided route for older history: in Chatlog Settings, import the official ChatGPT export ZIP or JSON, choose which chats to bring in, and select Markdown-folder or Obsidian delivery. It does not scan old chats from your ChatGPT sidebar, and the popup’s Save conversation action captures the chat currently open rather than converting an account archive. The trial’s historical import is limited to 25 unique chats per provider. For Notion, a folder is optional; choose Notion as the destination if that is where you want the notes. Notion is a separate destination service, so consider its handling of the content you send there.

Check the Markdown, not just the filenames

For a chat with a short script and a comparison table, check that code fences remain, columns stay distinct, and speaker order shows which prompt produced the code. Compare it with the source. If the table is one run-on line, adjust the converter before importing more. A link to an image or generated file does not guarantee the file itself is present.

Troubleshooting common export problems

No email yet? Check spam and promotions, and verify the account’s contact details. OpenAI says to wait up to seven days; if the export still has not arrived, contact OpenAI Support. If a request is already processing, wait for it to finish before requesting again. Link expired? Sign in to the requesting account and request a new export. Export option missing? Check workspace eligibility with its owner.

Before you rely on your archive

• The original ZIP is saved separately and remains unchanged.
• You can open the extracted conversation data and identify the chats you chose.
• Several Markdown notes show the right titles and preserve the message order.
• You checked code, tables, and any attachments you care about.
• The notes are in the intended folder or vault.

Does ChatGPT export directly to Markdown?

No. The account download is a ZIP with chat history and other account data. You need a separate conversion or import step to create Markdown notes.

Will the ZIP contain every conversation I ever had?

It contains the account data included in that export. OpenAI says an export cannot restore conversations already deleted, so check the archive rather than assuming it is complete.

Can I import the export into Obsidian?
