How to save Grok conversations as readable notes
Use Chatlog’s manual save to keep a readable note of one open Grok conversation.
By Chatlog team
The short version
Chatlog saves Grok manually, one conversation that is open and visible in Chrome at a time. Load the thread, let its messages appear, then choose Save conversation from the extension popup. Open the resulting Markdown note and compare it with the source. This is a convenient readable copy of visible text, not a download of your entire Grok account or a promise to include every attachment.
Prepare the conversation before saving
Sign in to Grok in Chrome and open the specific conversation you want to keep. Wait for the page to finish loading. If the thread is long and loads messages as you move through it, scroll from the beginning toward the middle and end so those sections have a chance to render. Chatlog’s Grok workflow is manual and reads the visible conversation text from the open page; it does not scan your Grok account history in the background or fetch every past conversation for you.
Before saving, decide where you want the note. Chatlog can keep a local Markdown archive, deliver to an optional destination, or use both. A folder is required for a local Markdown copy, but not a Notion-only setup. Check the destination settings first.
Save one visible Grok thread
With the conversation open, click the Chatlog extension icon in Chrome and choose Save conversation. This action requests a capture of that open thread; Grok is not an automatic provider in Chatlog. Keep the tab available while the capture runs. If the popup reports a partial result or a problem, treat that as a reason to inspect the note and retry after the page has loaded more of the conversation.
For a local copy, open Chatlog’s options page and go to Archive or your selected folder. Find the saved conversation by title and open its Markdown file. If you chose Notion as the destination, check the Chatlog status until delivery reports success, then locate the page in your authorized archive. A queued item only means delivery is waiting; it does not prove that Notion received the page. Local storage and destination delivery are separate copies with separate status.
Check that the note is readable and complete enough
Do a quick comparison while you can still open the source. Check the first prompt, a phrase from the middle, and the latest response. Confirm that speaker order makes sense and that code, links, or tables you care about remain readable. If the source page had not loaded all of its turns, the saved note may be incomplete; scroll further, wait for content, and save again. Keep the original thread available until you have reviewed the copy.
Images, uploaded files, and other page artifacts may not become embedded in the note. Capture depends on what the browser page exposes and what Chatlog supports; do not assume a saved reference is a durable copy of the original file. Download important source files from Grok separately when available and store them with your notes if you need them later.
Need older or account-wide Grok history?
Use Grok’s account data controls for a broader account download. xAI’s consumer FAQ says users can access, download, and delete data from the Grok app or Grok.com under Settings / Data Controls. Follow the current account screen and download instructions for your sign-in context. That official download is separate from Chatlog’s one-visible-conversation capture, and you should inspect the files it provides before assuming a particular format or importing it. (xAI consumer FAQ.)
Chatlog does not claim to import a Grok account ZIP, convert every file from an account export, or retrieve deleted conversations. Keep the original downloaded archive unchanged as your source copy. If you only want a readable note from one thread, save the visible conversation manually and verify that result on its own.
Troubleshoot a missing or partial save
If no note appears, confirm that you opened the right Grok conversation, selected Save conversation from the popup, and chose a local folder if you expected a Markdown file. Check the extension’s status for an error or queued delivery. If the browser page was still loading, return to Grok, scroll through the conversation, wait for its text to appear, and run the manual save again.
If a middle section is missing, revisit that part of the source thread and check whether it loaded. Compare the updated note. Download missing images or files separately when Grok offers them. If you edited a saved copy, check for a separate conflict copy before assuming a later save replaced your edit.
For a manual Notion alternative, save the Markdown file and import it through Notion’s Settings → Import → Text & Markdown. Notion imports standard Markdown, while some advanced formatting or anchors may need cleanup. This imports a file as a page; it does not create a live Grok connection. (Notion import instructions.)
Frequently asked questions
Does Chatlog automatically save all my Grok conversations?
No. Grok saving is a manual action for one conversation open in Chrome. Choose Save conversation from the extension popup for the thread you want to keep.
Will a Grok save include every image or uploaded file?
Do not assume so. The capture focuses on visible conversation text, and artifact availability varies. Download important files from Grok separately and check the saved note for partial-capture warnings.
How do I save older Grok history?
Use Grok’s own Settings/Data Controls to request an account data download. Chatlog’s manual capture does not fetch account-wide history or promise compatibility with the downloaded archive.
Why is the note incomplete?
The thread may not have fully loaded when you saved it. Scroll from the beginning through the middle and end, wait for the messages to appear, save again, and compare those sections with the source.
